Interview: Markus from Bravo’s The Fashion Show
FILED UNDER: Exclusive Interviews, The Fashion Show Posted: May 22, 2009 by behindtheseams | LEAVE A COMMENTSeenON! had a wonderful interview with Bravo’s The Fashion Show designer, Markus Ketty, who was eliminated from episode 3. Markus who has quite the fashion pedigree, was in good spirits despite being asked to leave and being referred to as a “dreamer.”
SO!: You were referred to as a “dreamer” by Isaac Mizrahi. In many ways, that can be taken as a compliment especially as an artist. Do you see it as such?
MK: In hindsight, yes. I am proud to be a dreamer. I have a huge amount of respect for Issac Mizrahi as a force in the fashion industry, and I hope that it wasn’t taken that I was offended by his comment. Valentino’s mother once called him a dreamer.
SO! You are an alumnus of Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London, along with such famed designers as John Galliano, Alexander McQueen and Stella McCartney. While Alexander McQueen has been revered as a tailor, Stella McCartney has been more noted for her design skills, much like yourself. Did you decide to take a particular track that led you in that direction?
MK: McQueen has a passion for tailoring and had an apprenticeship for Savile Row tailors Anderson & Sheppard at a young age. While at Saint Martins I focused on my strengths as a visionary. Saint Martins did a great job of working with designers on their individual strengths. Do I need to spend years and years learning how to sew, instead of focusing on what I do best? I know how to sew and can do it well when I can focus under normal business hours without twenty cameras filming me.
SO!: You were quite fashionable and well put together on the show, do you have any tips for us?
MK: Do what works well for you. I buy classics and mix with current trends.
SO!: So far all of the challenges on The Fashion Show have been collaborative, how did you feel about that? Did you know in advance that this is how the challenges were going to be?
MK: I didn’t know about this and was really disappointed . It is hard to work on a team with people who aren’t supportive. I am not referring to Haven or Johnny, they were wonderful. Not to berate the other designers, I just had enough of that. I still feel that I got to show some of my vision.
SO!: Going into “the fashion show”, did you know who was going to be in the audience?
MK: No, it was a complete surprise. We would see them on the screen backstage. It was very emotional, especially working for so many hours.
SO!: Any advice for the other “dreamers” out there?
MK: Keep dreaming.
Markus will be debuting his women’s wear collection, MARKUS KETTY, this September.
