Exclusive Interview: Reco from The Fashion Show
FILED UNDER: Exclusive Interviews, Features, Television, The Fashion Show Posted: July 20, 2009 by catwalker | LEAVE A COMMENTThis morning, SeenON! sat down to chat with Reco from The Fashion Show to get all the details about last week’s elimination and his final collection. Read on to see what the king of “runway sexy” had to say about who he hopes to dress in the future, his predictions for the winner and his success since the show.

SO!: The judges critiqued all the designers’ collections for flaws like over-complexity and fit. So why do you think you were ultimately chosen to be eliminated over the other designers?
I told James-Paul that it was going to be me. I was the fan favorite and I just knew that I was going to be eliminated. But I gave 110 percent - I gave it my all.
SO!: Â What would you say is the most valuable thing you learned about the industry from the competition? What was your most memorable experience?
I would say the Halston challenge. Yes, you can have the business mindset behind fashion, but you need to broaden your horizons and learn, learn, learn. A lot of times I get caught up thinking about how I am going to sell and market these pieces, but you have to know the history, too.
SO!: If you could show your collection again, what would you do differently?
To be honest, I wouldn’t change anything. What I showed is what I want to be known for. And I want to be known for beautiful, sexy clothes. I want there to be intricate pieces and simple clothes – I want my audience to see everything across the board.
SO!: Predictions – Who do you think America will choose to win The Fashion Show?
Anna. Nobody likes Daniella. And, let me ask you, would you want to buy from somebody you don’t like? I told James-Paul going into the challenge that he needs to make his designs wearable - do straightleg pants with some of those heavy coats. Give them something they know. His heart is in it, but people don’t understand him.
SO!: Our expert panelist could see you dressing the likes of Mariah Carey and Denise Richards? Do you agree? Who do you see yourself dressing in the future?
Any clown with some money (laughs). No. Â I only want to be dressing the most elite people like Michelle Obama. I am dying to work with Whitney Houston, Beyonce and Sarah Jessica Parker - so all A-list names who have a sexy style.
SO!: What new opportunities have you come across since the show? What’s next for you?
I’ve been working the circuit and receiving a lot of  inquiries about various fashion shows. I am going to be dressing a few comedians, working a party for some of the America’s Next Top Model girls - I am going be dressing Le Toya formerly of Destiny’s Child and Kelly Rowland asked me to make three pieces for her tour.
SO!: What’s next for you as a designer? Where can fans get your line?
I’m at Studio 423 in Chatanooga, TN. Soon, they’ll be able to visit HouseofChappelle.com and RecoChapelle.com, where they can get fun t-shirts, keychains- you know, a lot of novelty items. My Victory collection is coming out in Fall 2009. It’s inspired by extremely strong, powerful women like Michelle Obama and Beyonce. I also have a book coming out called How To Make Money in The Fashion Biz.  Like Isaac contested, it talks about how to be in fashion you need that business background. I’m also going to have a coffee table book coming out featuring a lot of pictures of my work.

…interesting that Reco mentions Sarah Jessica Parker in this interview
As others have noted over on the Bravo tFS discussions…. in episode 10 when Johnny was sent home for making a replica of another designer’s gown (Lanvin as worn by Maggie Gyllenhaal), Reco had done the very same thing.
His red carpet gown was a replica of a memorable gown worn by Carrie Bradshaw (Parker) on “Sex and the City”… albeit, like Johnny’s, in a different color than the original.
This being a contest with a $125,000 prize, I would think the show would be under some legal obligation to apply the rules equally… which may explain why Reco was unexpectedly let go the very next episode in a previously unmentioned final elimination.

I loved Reco on The Fashion Show. Once he was eliminated I didn’t watch anymore to see who won. It was ridiculous. He was passionate and sincere about his craft and always executed his pieces with sheer genius. It had to be rigged.
I am going to launch an e-boutique soon and I would love to offer his line to my customers. I think he is fabulous.
