Q&A with Gossip Girl Handbag Designer Michelle Vale

1) How did you get into designing?

My mother and father were both in fashion.  My mom owned a boutique and my father, a senior VP at Sasson jeans, during their heyday in the 80″s…. Being around the industry captivated my imagination. It was a very natural progression for me to finally launch my own company in 2007.

2) I love the functionality of the interchangeable hardware. How did you develop the idea?

One night I was dressing to go out and I did not like how the hardware on my bag looked with the jewelry I had chosen.  I was standing in front of the mirror and said to my husband, ” I wonder why there is not a bag on the market where you can select the color or texture of hardware you prefer and maybe even be able to switch it out, when you get bored?”

He suggested that I do it.  When I raised concerns about the investment required, he assured me by saying, “What better investment could I make than in my wife.”

I will never forget that!  I immediately started.

3) Your bags have been seen in magazines and on the arms of celebs.  What was that first moment that really blew your mind and you thought your line was going to make it?

When I saw photos of Kate Bosworth walking around with my Entrechat Bag in Australia.

She has such a cool style about her.  She never seems  to be afraid of taking a risk or wearing something that is original.  I knew that I was onto something if someone with her sense of fashion had chosen my brand.

4) Tell us about your first bag featured on Gossip Girl? How did that happen and how did being featured on such a style-driven show affect your line?

Eric Daman is an amazing stylist.  He knows how to mix styles in an unpredictable way that is always interesting.  A couple of years ago, I had invited him to a fundraising event that I was involved with.  We hit it off!  Shortly afterwards he began to use our bags on the show.    He has been a great supporter in growing my brand.  I am truly grateful that there are people like Eric out there, fostering new talent.

5) Who else have we seen your bags on and who would you love to see carrying one?

Most of my favorites have already carried a Michelle Vale including  Sarah Jessica Parker, Cameron Diaz, Kate Beckinsale, Blake Lively, and Kate Bosworth.

I Would love for Jennifer Aniston to have one of our bags.  The Michelle Vale client is a woman who is confident in jeans and a T-shirt, but loves to put on a cocktail dress every once and awhile.  She is effortlessly chic…and always has on one statement piece that is not loud, but is special enough to create a memorable impression.

From the Closet: Vampire Diaries’ Jennifer Bryan

  |  { 1 } COMMENT

Back in 2009, costume designer Jennifer Bryan got the call for a new show starting up called the Vampire Diaries. Fast forward two years later, and she’s clothing the hottest cast on TV today.

We pulled up a chair and talked with the woman responsible for putting the Salvatore brothers in those leather jackets, about the show, the characters and where you can find Elena and Bonnie’s clothes.

Read it all after the jump.

Project Runway Spin-Offs Coming This Year

If you can’t get enough Project Runway, we’ve got good news, two spin-offs are in the works.  The Wall Street Journal reported this morning that “Project Runway: Masters” and “Project Runway: Accessories” will be coming to your TV soon.

“Masters” will see professional and established designers facing off in challenges to earn m0ney for their favorite charities.  ”Accessories” will be, yep, you guessed it, accessories designers competing in weekly challenges, à la the original PR.

Both shows are set to premiere this year.

First Look at Joe Zee’s “All on the Line”

  |  { 1 } COMMENT

Joe Zee, Elle’s Creative Director, is going round two on his TV career with a new series, All on the Line, and the video preview is out.  In each of the eight one-hour shows, Joe helps an struggling designer try to turn their business around using a ‘tough love’ regimen.

The pilot features Leila Shams, whose collection has left her $60,000 in debt to her brother.  The host works to steer her clear of her love of “slutty fabrics.”  When Leila proclaims they’re “sexy,” Joe sets her straight: “The difference between slutty and sexy is three more inches on your dress.”

With that kind of talk, Joe may be the new Tim Gunn, but he’s quick to point out that this is no Project Runway. ”This show is no nonsense, it’s not a game.  It isn’t about elimination of contenstants”

Check out the preview for the Sundance Channel’s All on the Line here.

Celeb Look of the Day: Jessica Szohr in Chooka Rain Boots

On the set of Gossip Girl, Jessica Szohr’s look is full of patterns, color, and decidedly ‘Brooklyn Bohemian.’  But it’s her laid-back, yet put-together, off-duty aesthetic that we’re always trying to emulate.

Case in point, the star taking a break from filming and spending a little time with her dog, Waston, in New York.  Her easy winter staples get an upgrade with a pair of utilitarian-chic Chooka Noir rain boots.

Want the look? We’ve got Chooka rain boots in our SeenOn Winter Boutique–including the Moto and London Town styles seen here–starting at $36!  The boutique only lasts through December 31st though, so get to shopping here.

Olivia Palermo: Socialite, Reality Star, Fashion Designer?

Easily landing on many Top 10 Fashionista lists this year, coupled with a new reality series in the works, it was only a matter of time before Olivia Palermo announced she would be starting her own fashion line.  And she has.

Talking to Vogue Spain, the socialite explains that her new show will follow her rise as a fashion designer.  Not a novel idea, as almost everyone has pointed out, since The City was the vehicle for Whitney Port’s line Whitney Eve, and The Hills alum Lauren Conrad will be doing the same thing this year pushing her line, Paper Crown.

Will we watch? Of course we will. This girl has got amazing style. Question is, will you?

Check out Olivia’s spread (via OliviaDaily.com) from January’s Vogue Spain.

Sneak Peek: Rami Kashou and Kenneth Jay Lane Holiday Steals

We’re half-way through Holiday Steal week and based on how quick these deals have gone, we’re guessing you’re really digging it. So fast in fact, that today’s Amrita Singh clutch was swooped up before we had a chance to pick one up ourselves! Not that we’re mad or anything.

With two days left, we thought we’d give you faithful readers a sneak peek at the last two Holiday Steals of the week: a $549 made-to-order cocktail dress by Project Runway’s Rami Kashou for only $99 (btw, this is the same dress worn by Heidi Klum on the red carpet!), and a Kenneth Jay Lane crystal cocktail ring for $9.99.

These go on sale at 9am Thursday and Friday respectively, so you’ll want to sign in (or register) early or find yourselves empty-handed (kind of like we did today).
