Today, SeenON! sat down to chat with designer Angel Chang from The Fashion Show. In last night’s elimination, the judges just weren’t buying Angel’s B-Girls runway piece – but she doesn’t need the validation! Angel is a unique designer with a style (and imagination) that’s all her own. Read on to see what she had to say about the show!

SO!: It seems that the other contestants were given broad stereotypes such as “Nerds”, “Jocks” and “Preppies” and you were given a much more niche group – “B Girls”. Do you think that if you were given the stereotype of “Hip Hop Girls” as Kelly Rowland was making comparisons to, would you have had more success with your design?

AC: It definitely would have changed things. Had I have been given “hip hop” I think it would fit the judges criticism better. We weren’t allowed anytime to research the different groups.

SO!: How do you feel about Johnny publicly stating that he wanted to go home, yet you were asked to leave? Did you want to say something while you were standing before the judges?

AC: I feel like they weren’t criticizing me on my design or work. I think that at that point they had made up their minds, and I just didn’t care anymore. Sure, Johnny wanted to go but he has a crazy personality for TV, so they kept him.

SO!: You stated that you are very close with James-Paul. Are the two of you still close? Can we expect a joint collaboration from you two anytime soon?

AC: James-Paul is great. We speak every week. We have similar European design sensibilities. I have been in the industry since college and in New York since 1996, and it threw me for a loop to meet designers that were from other cities that aren’t main fashion capitals, such as Chicago. It was eye-opening. But James-Paul and I are working on a collaboration which we will offer after the show ends.

SO!: What is next for you?

AC:I am getting orders for the shirt dress from Episode 4, so I am in production for that. I am also working on my collection for September and getting back into the real world. I hope that my audience is now bigger. I am also going to Europe to work on the collaboration with James-Paul.

SO!: Any advice for budding designers?

AC: Work in the industry for a designer. Work for your favorite company and try and work under one of the founders. What people see in a design competition is much different than the real world, it is lots of work and endless hours. There is a misconception that it is glamorous. You have to really love fashion for the art.

I have a hard time with her not knowing b-girls vs hiphop. I mean she has lines in her hair, it dont get more hip hop than that. Didn’t she just ask the other designers. Seems like a cop out. I did love her shirt dress. I think a James Paul collabo could be cool.
